Covid-19: Maiduguri flyover construction to continue

Despite the outbreak of the pandemic viral infection in Nigeria, Borno state government says work will continue at the construction site to erect a N4 billion flyover project at Customs roundabout, Maiduguri, the state capital.

The Borno State Commissioner for Works, Yerima Saleh, stated this on Thursday, when he visited the site.

The comissioner noted that although, coronavirus has left thousands infected and others dead globally, leading to the government putting out stringents measures to curtail the spread, nonetheless it will not “affect the execution of this flyover contract.”

Recall that last month, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Ameachi said that due to the coronavirus outbreak, construction work on the Lagos-Ibadan rail project will be put on hold. The project was scheduled for commissioning in April 2020.

Meanwhile, Mr Saleh said that the project will continue and will be delivered within the scheduled date.

“It is an 18-month contract, the execution of which started four months ago, to be completed in June 2021 and it has been made categorically clear to the contractors that there will not be an extension of time.

“So the contractors are not even asking for any extension of time, which is not even being contemplated, and we are not experiencing any challenge in the execution of the contract, he said.”
