I asked a friend who he was supporting in the coming Edo State elections, and why he was supporting the candidate.
He told me that he just “liked” him. I asked why? He said, “just like that”. I was a little patient with him. I asked further what he was expecting if his candidate wins the election.
He said, “anything”. I said, “anything is Nothing”. He stared at me like a frustrated divorcee. I asked him to mention some promises of his candidate during the ongoing campaign.
He replied that anyone thought he could be fooled again. He began insulting his candidate’s opponents, and called him different names. He said the opponent can never win this election. He quarrelled with his political opponent in absentia, and walked out on me in fury. This is the mindset of most electorates clamouring for the victory of their candidates.
This is where we have found ourselves. I ask, how did we get here? What has happened to our brains? What happened to our generation? What happened to our expectations of dividends of democracy? Where are we going from here?
